DESIGN BRIEF
Implementing a main and secondary program within a shophouse.
SKINDEEP
Skindeep is skincare workshop space with a bath house situated on the upper levels. The aim is to provide a space in which people can learn about skincare ingredients as well as going through an elevated bathing experience. The goal is to create a sensorial and calming journey through the space, allowing city folk to fully immerse themselves into a moment of taking care of themselves and learning how to do so.
SITE LOCATION
Our site is unit 50 located along Arab Street. Arab Street is situated within a historical area known as Kampong Gelam. Situated in an area with a large cluster of shophouses and is connected to four other units that look similar to our site. Arab Street is a bustling cultural hub attracting a diverse crowd of people. Known for their Malay heritage, streetart, eateries as well as small boutiques.

"LAYERS OF THE SKIN"
The design is based on the anatomy of the skin. Different levels of the building representing different layers of the skin; the epidermis, the dermis and the hypodermis. Simply put, they are broken up into the top layer, mid layer and bottom layer.
The layering of the building is however an inverted version of the skin anatomy. This is due to the fact that the first level would be the main entry point in the building, therefore representing the pores of the skin. Subsequently, level 2 will represent the mid section of the skin anatomy, this level has a double volume height to communicate the thickness of this layer. The upper levels will represent the deepest layer of the skin.
The program within building will also coincide with these layers, separating private and public spaces. As you move up through the levels, people are meant to feel a disconnect from the bustling crowds of Arab Street and enter a sensorial escape with the space feeling increasingly more private as you go into the deepest layer of the skin.
