DESIGN BRIEF:
To design a retail space based on a given brand
SITE LOCATION:
Our site (UNIQLO) is located within Orchard Central shopping center. This mall is connected to two other shopping centers; 313 Somerset and Orchard Gateway. The building that houses these three shopping malls is situated in the Somerset subzone within the Orchard Planning Area.
BROMPTON
The brand Brompton is most widely known for their folding bikes, a product that is mainly focused on improving the lives of those who stay in urban areas, its compact and minimalistic approach along with the sleek and thoughtful design is what sets the bike apart from other folding bike brands. Knowing all this information as context, the design of the project was done with careful consideration of what an urban dweller would want and need in their lives. The key considerations of the project were the words; terrain, active and minimal.
STOPSITE
STOPSITE is the name of the project, this name cam about with the idea of the space being a pit stop for cyclist that that use the Brompton bike. The concept of the store is a space in which cyclist can stop and rest as the site location is right smack in the middle of Singapore. The secondary use of the space is a yoga studio with an open floorplan that creates a area in which the view is not obstructed by walls. This being said some areas are covered by panels that creates some privacy in areas such as the resting “pods” that can be seen on the floorplan of level 2.
To further emphasize the branding of Brompton, the space allows people to rent out Brompton bikes and STOPSITE also gives special amenities to those that own their own Brompton bikes. On the right, there are sketches of the main concept and idea for the design language of the store. The idea of minimalism and terrain are the main visual idea components that make up the space. When thinking about terrain, the idea of the contour map was the appropriate choice that concisely encapsulated the idea of terrain. In addition, the staggering floor acts as areas to sit, climb as well as ascend to level 2.
